Synopsis

The author notes that the modern companion story about the constable's boss getting pregnant with her baby is already complete, and this historical novel is also fully finished. The blurb then promotes another current serial, My Taoist Girlfriend Is a Movie Queen, a modern entertainment-industry girls-love story pairing a flirtatious ghost-baiting younger attacker with a cool but secretly repressed ghost-exorcising receiver, as well as a campus modern-yuri reserve story called My Mute Bride. The main story follows Tang Xiaotian, an ambitious young woman from the twenty-first century who dies after being poisoned while investigating a cold case. At the last instant of her life, she is reborn into a fictional historical dynasty as a substitute constable. Remembering how carelessness got her killed in her previous life, she cherishes this second chance and plans to solve small cases, do a little business, and quietly climb to the peak of life. She dreams of becoming a beloved righteous champion and wealthy merchant in a small town, but everything becomes absurd when the emperor's most favored princess secretly infiltrates her side as an undercover spy. Whether Tang Xiaotian is eating steamed buns, investigating cases, falling into rivers, jumping off cliffs, or listening to music, she keeps getting entangled with the wicked princess. Even the attendants at the music house panic and shut their doors when they see her coming. Tang Xiaotian cannot help wondering what she is supposed to do when the undercover spy assigned to monitor her seems to have fallen in love with her instead. As the two women wander through one bizarre case after another, Tang Xiaotian gradually feels that this life could stay like this forever, only for the princess to suddenly disappear. She storms toward the imperial city with blade in hand, ready to kill her way through, and instead gets kidnapped into the princess residence and forced into marriage. When the furious princess sees her arrive with a knife, she asks whether Tang Xiaotian has no intention of living anymore. Tang Xiaotian can only say that she was worried because the princess had been away from home for so long that she might have gotten lost, while everyone else stares in disbelief because they were sure she had come to massacre the imperial city. The reading notes promise mutual undercover identities, mutual secret crushes, one-on-one devotion, mutual purity, cross-dressing, and childbirth. The extra blurb for My Taoist Girlfriend Is a Movie Queen then follows Xu Yifan, the young heiress of an entertainment company whose personality changes drastically after a camping trip. Her parents search everywhere for a cure until the famous actress Li Mengxuan declares that if Xu Yifan wants to recover completely, she must become her assistant. Xu Yifan happily agrees, only to discover that the job involves using beauty to lure headless female ghosts, gambling with dead spirits at crossroads in the middle of the night, and even managing the meals, tempers, and relationship disputes of a whole gang of little ghosts. Just when Xu Yifan is about to rebel, the usually cold movie queen grows unexpectedly proactive, and even the ghosts start calling her their boss's lover.
