Synopsis

If I had a choice, I would not become a king, and I certainly would not fail my chancellor. At first Murong Rui never dreamed of leaving her name for the ages or winning glory. She only wanted a small, peaceful life in Qianzhou with Yan Wuwei: teasing cats and dogs, flying kites, and living beautifully. At thirty they could even choose an adorable little girl to adopt as a daughter, and given Yan Wuwei's virtuous wife-and-mother temperament, she would surely make a good mother. Murong Rui would only need to compete with the daughter for affection. But later the times fall into war, her father and brothers die in battle, and as a princess she has no choice but to return to the royal capital and inherit the throne. Before leaving she asks Yan Wuwei if she is afraid. Yan Wuwei replies calmly that she fears Murong Rui will return to the palace, gather three thousand beauties, and forget her. That makes Murong Rui so angry she pins Yan Wuwei's head down and forces her to bow through a wedding ceremony on the spot. After the wedding night Murong Rui leans against the bedhead and asks seriously whether Yan Wuwei truly does not know her feelings. Yan Wuwei only smiles and says nothing. Once Murong Rui returns to the capital and takes the throne, the first thing she does is appoint Yan Wuwei as chancellor. The ministers protest that such a thing cannot be done because no woman can serve as chancellor. Murong Rui calmly suggests that if that is the problem, perhaps she should make Yan Wuwei queen instead. The ministers fall silent, and thus Yan Wuwei becomes the chancellor of Great Qin. The king loves her chancellor and shares her couch; they stay awake together through the night, and the whole world knows it. To honor their bond, people call them an emperor-and-chancellor pair of a single court. When Murong Rui hears that title, she tells Yan Wuwei that since emperor comes first, she should naturally be on top. Oh? asks Yan Wuwei. Murong Rui flies into a righteous rage and says that how can a king possibly be underneath? One sideways glance from Yan Wuwei later, Murong Rui gives in and mutters that, well, it is not completely impossible.
